Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks

Birdsong

By Sebastian Faulks

Though there is a pre-war romance and some scenes set in the 1970's the heart of this book is the trench warfare of World War One. Rats, mud, blood and lice are everywhere as those who will not go "over the top" are shot. "Birdsong's" particular focus is on the claustrophobia of the maze of tunnels which were dug by both sides: being buried alive, digging into a German tunnel by accident or being shot with nowhere to run. Though the horrors of the Somme are already familiar the writing is so powerful you will share the pain and despair of the men and fervently hope they will survive and return home.
